Fishing Lake Tahoe for the first time can seem like a daunting task at best.Without a boat, chances of success are close to zilch, and even with a boat your odds are slim unless you have the requisite electronic fish-finding gear. The best strategy for new arrivals is to go out with a guide and learn the ropes.
INFORMATION
CALIFORNIA - California Department of Fish and Game, Region 2, Fisheries Management, 1701 Nimbus Road, Suite A, Rancho Cordova, California 95670.
NEVADA - Nevada Division of Wildlife, Region 1, 380 West B Street, Fallon, Nevada, 89406, Tel: 775-423-3171.
SPECIAL RESTRICTIONS AT LAKE TAHOE - You can fish at Tahoe with either a valid California or Nevada fishing license. However, California rules that allow fishing with two rods (at an extra fee) to the angler are not observed in Nevada, and you are subject to a citation if you exercise this practice across the state line.
On the California side of the lake, fishing is prohibited in tributary streams (to protect spawning trout) and within 300 feet of the mouth of these streams from October 1 to June 30. On the Nevada side, closed areas are within a 200 yard radius of the mouths of Third, Incline and Wood creeks; within a 500-yard radius of the Sand Harbor Boat Ramp; and within the boat-launch area inside the jetty at Cave Rock Boat Ramp. Only specific minnows and suckers caught from Lake Tahoe can be used as bait.
